White Cane Awareness and Pedestrian Safety Walks

This is a joint effort between the Mayor’s Alliance for Persons with Disabilities of Daytona Bech, Halifax Council of the Blind (HCB), the Greater Daytona Beach chapter of National Federation of the Blind of Floirda (NFBF) and various consumer groups, servce agencies, govermental agencies and other organizations. Special thanks go to the police department of Daytona Beach for its ongoing initiative in promoting pedestrian safety.
We will be walking clockwise in the crosswalks and according to the pedestrian walk lights.
Tables will be set up near the walk routes, where we will be handing out information on the White Cane Law, the new Pedestrian Safety Law nd various consumer groups, service and governmental agencies.
We are expecting several local mayors, local politicians and media to attend.
Proclamations for White Cane Awareness Dy and Pedestrian Safety will be read from the Cities of Daytona Beac, Volusia County and neighboring towns.
Two of our members, who are legally blind, have been ht by the vehicle in the past.
We need to heighten the publics awareness of pedestrians, particularly those with visual and physical impairments, and te need for drivers to be constantly vigilant and respectful of the pedestrians need to cross streets.
